Former Manchester United captain and FIFA Club World Cup winner Nemanja Vidic has announced his retirement from football.
The
news comes after the 34-year-old defender formally rescinded his
contract with Inter Milan earlier this month, after failing to make an
appearance for the Serie A side this season.
Vidic told www.manutd.com: "The time has come for me to hang up my boots. The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll.
"I
would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the
managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big 'thank you' to the
fans for their support over the years."
The
Serbian, who made 56 appearances for his country, including three at
the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ joined United in the 2005/06
season from Spartak Moscow and went on to form a celebrated centre-back
partnership with Rio Ferdinand.
Vidic's
time with the Red Devils saw him win the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League,
five Premier League titles and the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2008. He
scored in the semi-final victory over Gamba Osaka and helped his side
keep a clean sheet in the final as they defeated Liga de Quito 1-0.
Vidic
joined Inter Milan on a free transfer in July 2014 and made 28
appearances for Roberto Mancini's side in his first season, but did not
feature for the Nerazzurri this campaign following surgery on a hernia
in August.
