Two stolen kids that were rescued by the Cross River State Police Command on Thursday said they were made s*x slaves by a herbalist, Emmanuel Akpan-Okon, who held them hostage for four years.
The kids, Esther Wisdom and Felicia Destiny, both aged 11, said in the four years that they were held hostage, the herbalist raped them almost every day.
Akpan-Okon (42) was arrested by the police following a tip-off that he specialised in the preparation of charms for armed robbers.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Henry Fadairo, said the rescued kids were abducted from their parents separately from Onitsha, Anambra State, and Auchi, Edo State.
He said, “On November 16, 2015, we raided one Emmanuel Akpan’s home in Akamkpa, in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, based on a tip-off. We gathered he was into the preparation of charms for armed robbers and treatment of criminals with bullet wounds.
“During the raid, we saw two little girls in his house. One is Esther Wisdom and the other, Felicia Destiny. They are both 11 years. On enquiry, we found out that they were abducted four years ago. Wisdom was stolen from Onitsha while Destiny was stolen from Auchi.
“We are making efforts to see how we can locate their parents. The victims claimed that he had been having regular s*x with them.”
Destiny said she was in primary four when she was abducted, adding that the herbalist had raped her many times.
She said, “I was in primary four when he took me away from my home. I remember that my mother lost her sister and when she was going for the burial, she told the man, who was a commercial motorcycle rider, to bring me to her village. That was how I found myself living with him. I used to tell him that I did not like s*x, but he continued.”
Also, Wisdom said, “He has been having s*x with us regularly. He gives us food to eat and promises that one day he will take us back to our mothers.”
Akpan-Okon, who is from Akwa Ibom State, said he abducted the girls because their mothers could not cater for them.
He said, “While staying in the same compound with Wisdom’s mother at Onitsha, I observed that she had problems bringing up her nine children. This girl, Wisdom, was always with me when I was staying in their compound. So, when I wanted to leave Onitsha, I took her with me without telling her mother.
“When I left Onitsha with her, I went to Auchi, and was riding a commercial motorcycle as a means of livelihood.
Where I stayed in Auchi, Destiny was always coming to play with Esther. I also noticed that Destiny’s mother had many children. So, when I wanted to leave the town, I took her along.
“I had s*x with them and I know it is bad in the sight of God. I have a girl child who is with the mother. I will not be happy if she is treated this way.”

Three tickets to Rio up for grabs in Africa.

Victor Osimhen (R) of Nigeria is challenged by Mamadou Sangare of Mali

When Africa's eight best teams meet in Senegal to contest the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations beginning this weekend, they will be playing for much more than continental bragging rights. On offer is a much bigger prize: three tickets to the Men's Olympic Football Tournament next summer in Rio de Janeiro.
The two finalists and the winner of the third place play-off match will represent the continent at next year's Olympic games, and one thing is for sure: Africa will not be sending a rookie to Rio as all eight teams participating in Senegal have already competed at the Olympics and therefore firmly know what is at stake.
Although Nigeria have been the dominant force in African youth football, it is Egypt who can claim the most number of appearances at the Olympics. The Pharaohs have played for Olympic gold 11 times with only a handful of countries around the world having reached the Olympics more often. The north Africans have been drawn into arguably the tougher qualifying group, which will play their matches in M'Bour. The Egyptians will face local rivals Algeria, Nigeria, as well as Mali, who are rapidly becoming one of the powerhouses of youth football, and who knocked out the title holders Gabon in qualifying.

Another Dream Team
Nigeria, who in 1996 became the first African country to win Olympic gold, have not had the smoothest of preparations with coach Samson Siasia having been unable to secure the release of all his foreign-based players. Not making the trip to Senegal is Manchester City sensation Kelechi Iheanacho, as well as Granada's Isaac Success. The latter's late withdrawal from the final squad has opened the door for Victor Osimhen, who secured the adidas Golden Boot at the recent FIFA U-17 World Cup with ten goals in seven matches, taking home the Golden Ball for good measure, as Nigeria successfully defended their title.
Siasia's own availability for the trip to Senegal was thrown in doubt shortly before the start of the tournament when his mother was kidnapped by armed bandits, and even though he has stated that he will coach the team, the situation is ongoing.
The Dream Team VI, as the team is called, connecting them to the Dream Team that won gold in Atlanta, also had to endure an unscheduled emergency stop in Accra en route to a training camp in Gambia. All of that notwithstanding, the west Africans will go into the two-week tournament as one of the favourites. It is a role that the players have taken on. Taiwo Awoniyi, who is one of three European-based players in the squad and scored both goals in his side's 2-1 victory against Congo DR in the final qualifying round, is confident the team can do well.
“It is all about hard work and it is work time," Awoniyi said. "Qualifying for the Rio Olympics is non-negotiable as we have no excuse to give Nigerians, that’s why we have to put in our best to get something out of Senegal.”
The Nigerians can expect some stiff opposition from Egypt, even if Hossam El-Badry is sweating over the availability of Al Ahly player Saleh Gomaa, who is carrying an injury. This has forced the coach to call up an extra player. “I took the necessary steps to make sure we have a good team,” he said.

Full focus
South African coach Owen Da Gama, whose side will be facing Tunisia, Zambia and hosts Senegal in Group A, has received the full backing of the South African Premier League, who have cancelled all fixtures for the duration of the tournament to allow clubs to release players. He has called on his squad to follow the example set by Banyana Banyana, who have already qualified for the Olympic Women's tournament. “Should things go our way then the players will go down in history as the second South African team to have qualified for the Olympic Games," Da Gama said.
Zambian fans are hoping their side can gain some inspiration from the class of '88, when Kalusha Bwalya inspired the team to a famous 4-0 thrashing of Italy in Seoul. Fighton Simukonda has called up seven players who were involved in Chipolopolo's 3-0 aggregate victory in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifier earlier this month. Simukonda laughed off suggestions that his team was not strong enough to advance past the group stage. “By the time we get there, we will be 100 per cent. We are going to reach the semi-finals and no less.”

Ojukwu’s spirit guiding Biafran protests.

Chukwuemeka Ojukwu
A chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, Chief Chris Uche, says the spirit of the late Leader of the defunct Republic of Biafra, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, is behind the recent pro-Biafran agitation.
He said this in Owerri on Thursday at the third memorial anniversary of Ojukwu.
Uche added that Biafra would be declared a sovereign state without the shedding of blood.
He also noted that those who died for the Biafran cause would never be forgotten.
Uche, who is also a former Commissioner for Housing in Imo State, said that the time for the realisation of Biafra was drawing near.
He said, “Ojukwu gave us a template. He is still alive in our minds. Chief Uwazuruike’s yearly remembrance ceremony in his honour is bringing the time closer for the realisation of Biafra. We shall keep the flag flying and we shall achieve it without shooting of gun.”
Also speaking, the founder of the Oodua People’s Congress, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, said there was nothing wrong with the recent protests for the creation of a Biafran state.
The 80-year-old politician thanked Biafran agitators for going about their protests peacefully and urged the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra to continue to protest peacefully.
Also speaking, the leader of MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, said that the essence of the anniversary of Ojukwu was to rekindle the consciousness of Biafra among the people.
He said that MASSOB was a non-violent group but regretted that the Indigenous People of Biafra, which recently emerged, was using threats of violence to achieve its aim.
He called for the unconditional release of Radio Biafra Director, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
Uwazuruike said, “They (IPOB) believe that since MASSOB has not achieved Biafra through non-violent methods for 16 years, they will achieve it through violence. They threatened fire and castigated some Igbo leaders.”

JAMB Registrar Speaks On Validity Of UTME Results For 3 Years.

dibu-jamb
JAMB registrar, Mr. Dibu Ojerinde, has faulted the Nigerian senate’s call for that UTME results be valid for 3 years.
According to him, such a policy would delay and obstruct the education progress of students across board.
“There are complexities in this thing, until we are able to clear it. When you say you will use JAMB results for three years, is it an achievement test or aptitude test?
However, are we delaying his or her life? Are we postponing his or her life by telling them to stay at home? If by next year he doesn’t get the cut off points, what happens?
Mr. Ojerinde also said that expressing reservations about the Senate position did not in any way signify opposition to cutting cost.
“I have nothing against the idea, because we will tell the children, ‘those bluffing Polytechnics and College of Education, go there and waste their time’, if it is a waste of time.”
He spoke in Abuja during the opening ceremony of JAMB-UNEB Benchmark on Item Banking.
